Hi. I’m Helen Hieble. Thanks for checking out my blog! I self-published The Wizard of Hirodenal in June of 2013, but before I published it I had to write it. Some people think that writing is easy. It’s not. The Wizard of Hirodenal is a short novella, only 102 pages, but that didn’t make it any easier to write. There’s a lot of thinking, planning, rewriting and editing that goes into writing a story like this. Or any kind of writing. But I love writing and I had a lot of fun writing it. And it would have been a lot longer if I hadn’t had a deadline. I wrote the Wizard of Hirodenal as a part of my senior project for college and I needed to finish it in order to graduate. But I am happy with how it turned out in the end.
Before I end this first post, I want to tell you a little bit about where the title came from and why I decided to write this particular story. The title is a reference to my character Liam’s history, which I sadly didn’t get to put into this book. Though if you read it carefully you’ll find I hinted at it! Basically it’s “Hero” “Den” and “Al” – meaning “hero of all dens.” Hirodenal. Hopefully if I write a second book, I’ll go into Liam’s past more. As for why I decided to write this story, I think it’s very important that everyone’s story be heard. I want to inspire the people who read my book, whether they’re gay or straight, or they have a disability or not, to believe in themselves. To never give up and to accept themselves and each other as they are. Because everyone is special and perfect no matter what anyone else thinks or tells them. I know I can’t save the world but if my book can help even one person feel better about themselves, then it was worth every second of work I put into it. And I would happily do it again. Until next time.
